business 4 to the rest area just east of manassas. -- near business 234. the lanes are open and the beltway runs smoothly between nypd and merrifield. southbound along 270, no issues reported but definitely slowing as you continue past urbana and reported at 409. we do have an update location for the crash reported along 175-6789 police call back and said it is on 32 near shaker drive tying up the left side of the highway. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. e traffic. new developments in the oscar pistorius case. the double amputee track star is in court for a bill hearing. he broke down crying as the judge officially charged him with a premeditated murder of his girlfriend. prosecutors say pistorius got up from bed, put on his prosthetic legs and walked more than 23 feet before firing fewer shots at her through the bathroom door. the defense maintains the shooting was accidental. in court today, pistorius

nodded after the chief magistrate asked if he was well. before a break was culled in the session, the magistrate ruled that pistorius faces the harshest bail requirements available in south african law. as the hearing played out in the capital of south africa, the woman's body was being driven to a church for a memorial service in port elizabeth. six pallbearers karried the coffin draped in white flowers. relatives from around the world gathered to say good-bye. her mother says the family just wants answers. s answers. checking our local top stories now, an alert from prince william county after five juveniles escaped from a detention facility. this happened around 12:30 this morning. the five left the molinari facility. in the group are one white male, one hispanic female, two african-american fee males and

one african-american male. they are we we are -- we aring gray sweatpants and white t- shirts -- wearing gray wet pants and white t-shirts. >> reporter: this is at least the fourth violent death of a teen in prince george's county this past school year and though police haven't given us a lot of details, they do say that they are investigating the death of this young man as a murder. it was a dr to door canvass for information in hillcrest heights. detectives looking for any snippet of information that could help them piece together what happened on 28th avenue around 4 charleston 20 on monday. a 15-year-old male, a freshman at suitland high school, found in the road with what police describe as tarek mehannaer to the upper body. he was pronounced dead at the hospital. >> niceling boy, not into the

streets. he was a good boy. he was just a little boy. 15, first year of high school, played basketball. >> i've lived here for about a year and i've never seen anything like this tragic happen around our neighborhood. kind of shocking. >> prince george's county schools release a statement saying they are deeply saddened by the tragic death of one of our students. the senseless acts of violence are becoming all too familiar and far too common. we extend our deepest condolences for the student's family and friends during this difficult time. the teen's aunt tells fox 5 that she fears her nephew may have been targeted on his way to the bus stop. she says all of this happened about 10 minute after he left his house. she says he was carrying a new pair of shoes he was going to give to his girlfriend. that is the latest here in forestville. back to you. >> sad story. thank you. to virginia how where at least 60 people are without a

with this morning's business beat. >> good morning. >> markets were closed yesterday but you are eyeing some news coming out of the housing industry today. >> that's right. we will be watching the national association of home builders. they will release their monthly index and last reading was 47. that is pretty good considering that it is the highest since 2006 and it has been high for several months now and holding at that level. expectation today is 48. now, to put this into english, the sweet spot is 50. a reading of 50 means 50% of the home builders anticipate that the market will be improving and 50% are confident that it will not improve. we are still not quite at 50 but we are moving up that way. highest reading since 2006. futures are in positive territory. >> a lot of people are cautiously optimistic.housing industry as well. let's move on and talk about this next subject which has to do with e maim the i remember

welcome back to fox 5 morning news. the boston bruins spent their day off visiting students at sandy hook elementary at their new school. players signed autographs and played games with the kids. it has been almost two months now since the tragedy in newtown, connecticut. and the supreme court is hearing arguments today fry huge seed company and a 75-year- old farmer from india. monsanto, the biggest farming corporation in the world is suing over its soybean sides

which are resistant to weed killer. monsanto claims to own all seeds that result from its genetic engineering. the high court will decide if anyone or any corporation can control a product after it is sold. the town of poimacon deep in siberia ringly has temperatures dipping to 60 degrees below fahrenheit. 500 people live here and they try their best to stay warm during the eight months of winter. it sounds very appealing. >> it is so cold that cell phones and many electronics don't work there. you've got eight months of temperatures that are freezing and you don't have a cell phone that works and electronics that work. >> sounds like paradise, doesn't it? >> sounds like paradise. >> if you like cold weather, head on over to siberia.

getting shocked by static electricity more often when i touch a door handle, a light switch, et cetera. whaft week when i turned on the light switch in my house, i got shocked. throughout my fingers and up my arm. you felt tingly for over an hour. it really scared me. is it possible to have more static electricity in your body in the colder months than the warmer months. how can you avoid getting shocked so much? good question. >> does she need to contact a doctor? >> i am a little worried about the arm thing. >> what you describe, i do want want to be largist is unusual. it sounds like you real will you were shocked, not simply static electricity. >> maybe she was just electrocuted. >> or something. >> honestly, i would maybe check with a doctor because a tingly sensations in the arms can be indications of many different things or maybe check with an electrician because

what you describe is unusual and is more than your standard static electricity. having said that, we'll turn our attention to static electricity. nicky is right. this phenomenon occurs more frequently in the winter time and that is because the air is drier in the wintertime. when you are walking in your house or wherever are walking or particularly in your house and you have -- and you've got carpet and you are walking along that, you are building up -- it is all about electrons. >> it is fascinating stuff but somewhat scientific. >> it can be fairly complicated. >> when you are rubbing two substances together that are not like. for instance your skin and your clothes, you build up a negative charge. >> that's right. >> and as you walk -- i'm quoting here from some scientific journal. as you walk across a carpet, electrons mover from the rug to

you, for example. now, you have extra electrons and a negative static charge like tucker mentioned. as soon as you touch a door knob, light switch, another person, whatever, that is the conductor and the electrons jump from you to the knob and you feel the static shock. we usually only notice static electricity in the winter when the air is very dry. during the summer, the air is more humid. the water in the air helps electrons move off of you more quickly so can you not build up as big a static charge. so the solution, nicky is to put a humidifier in your house. now, depending on the size of your house, can you have one if it is a bigger house, can you have one installed right on your heating an air conditioning system. they tell you how to use it and all that kind of stuff. it just puts more humidity in the air, make it less likely that you will shock yourself. or you can use room humidifiers if you would rather do that. also, don't drag your feet. i tell my son this all the

2/19/13 good morning, everybody. i'm holly morris. this morning we are show casing brilliant minds and happen to be 6th, 7th and 8th graders. we are live where they are set for the national finals of national engineer week for future city competition. it's an amazing competition. 36,000 students participate in it. and it's been wheeled down to 36 teams. they have to design a future city. they are given an environmental problem which this year is rethink runoff. then they build a model. they have $100 budget and have to use recycled materials. present their solution to a panel of judges and hopefully save the
